Remote Work Options for Visitors: What You Need to Know

29 January 2025

Remote Work Options for Visitors

The New Zealand Government has announced exciting changes to visitor visa conditions, allowing individuals to work remotely for overseas employers while visiting the country. This update, effective from 27 January 2025, applies to both visitor visa holders and those entering with an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority).

Whether you’re a tourist, visiting family, or staying on a longer-term visitor visa, these new rules mean you can now work remotely as a digital nomad without breaching your visa conditions. This change opens up opportunities for visitors to stay connected with their overseas employers or clients while enjoying all that New Zealand has to offer.

Key Details of the New Remote Work Conditions

  • Who is eligible?
The new conditions apply to all visitor visa holders and NZeTA entrants, including tourists, family visitors, and those on longer-term visitor visas.
  • What is allowed?
Visitors can work remotely for an overseas employer or client while in New Zealand.
  • What is not allowed?
    Visitor visa holders cannot:
    • Work for a New Zealand employer.
    • Provide goods or services to individuals or businesses in New Zealand.
    • Perform work that requires physical presence at a New Zealand workplace.

Tax Implications for Remote Workers

The tax treatment of income earned while working remotely in New Zealand depends on your individual circumstances. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Short-term stays (up to 92 days):
If your income is taxed in another country and you spend 92 days or less in New Zealand within a 12-month period (non-consecutive), your income will generally be exempt from New Zealand tax.
  • Longer stays (over 92 days):
If you stay in New Zealand for more than 92 days (or 183 days if you’re a tax resident of a country with a tax treaty with New Zealand), your income may be subject to New Zealand tax. This tax applies from the first day of your stay and is calculated at the same rates as for New Zealand residents.

New Zealand has tax treaties with over 40 countries, including Australia, the UK, the US, and most of Europe and Asia. For more detailed information, visit the Inland Revenue website.

How to Apply

The new remote work conditions will apply to visitor visa and NZeTA applications received from 27 January 2025. If you’re planning to work remotely during your visit, ensure you meet the eligibility criteria and understand the tax rules relevant to your situation.
